Day 7

Day 7 of DFI: Learners' Devices: Putting ourselves in their shoes

Today we used ipads and chromebooks to complete a set of tasks to get an idea of what it feels like to be a child in our class using the device to complete set tasks given by the teacher.

Using the chromebook was interesting as some of the buttons and shortcuts I take for granted on a mac are not available or transferrable to a chromebook. We had the task of completing a Digital Dig- there were a lot of shortcuts that I knew I wouldn't remember so it was good to have a place to write them all down.

Overall an interesting experience that has gotten me empathising with my learners when they are on their devices.

Day 4 - DFI

Day 4 of DFI: Google Sheets, Forms and Maps 29/03/19

Here is the Agenda for today.

Today was full of new learning again. We focussed on google sheets, google forms and google maps.

Some great ideas to use in class:

-Pixel art

-Getting children to analyse their blogging data from previous years and create a graph on google sheets as well as embedding it onto their blogs to share. They can try and justify the fluctuations in their graphs or ask questions.

-Creating a google form for statistical process and inviting their buddies from Mangonui School to answer it

-Choose your path using google forms -Alien Invasion Example

-Google Maps for finding the route we walk to school etc.

Day 9 - Computational Thinking

                                Computational Thinking

A fascinating day exploring binary and code making, using sequencing and step by step procedures. With technology being part of the curriculum, it is necessary to be investigating algerithems, decoding, error detection and debugging,

We discussing ethics and morals in relation to computerized technology and the consequences. Our  DFI cohort was exposed to Sophia the Robert which was fascinating.

DFI Day 5

Creating a Multi Model Google Site

Day 5 of our DFI course embraced the creation of a multi model google site, using collaborative skills, within our teams, as we researched the theme 'Garden with Science'. Creating a 'Garden to Table' vegetable project for our learners at school.

An emphasis was placed on the importance of offering a selection of alternatives for the children to choose from, when learning, whereby they are engaged and enthusiastic about the topic, showing a greater willingness to participate. It was acknowledged that all children respond differently to learning tools, language and stimuli. Thus as teachers, we need to be in a position to offer a wide selection of learning material to entice our boys and girls. The multi model tool is an excellent example of a resource, to experiment within the classroom.

Preparing the individual buttons for our multi model learning site was time consuming and a little frustrating.

It was interesting to view the selection of material used on various subjects and discovering what appealed to the DFI cohort - we each liked and disliked different images, styles, fonts and layouts. However - there was a general consensus that the brighter, exciting, colourful multi model sites will be captivating and able to hook the learner.

In order to become increasingly confident with the digital mechanisms introduced - ongoing practice and experimentation is required.

Day 2 - DFI

Day 2 - DFI Workshop

A fascinating day of digital initiatives, foundation knowledge and making both personal and professional connections.

Also establishing an online hangout with colleagues, in order to converse, learn, create and share whist in different locations. Followed by a scheduled appointment to reconnect with Camilla on Tuesday afternoon.

The session concluded with customising our professional blog, uploading a profile photo and personalising the layout.

Please enjoy some of the art work from the hard working and enthusiastic artists in Room 7 - Glen Taylor Primary.

Colourful, stylish and imaginative work Charlotte

Good work Kaedyns. Thank you for sharing.

Day 3

A busy and productive day learning how to construct a Pepeha Google Slide. Learning and sharing information about our family heritage and geography, incorporating images and design features to enhance the slide show.

We also constructed a google drawing to be used as a side bar on our class blog.

I had fun uploading blogs for Room 7 - showing the children's work and smiling faces.

A good day amongst my DFI colleagues.

Day 1 - DFI Workshop

Manaiakalani - A Hook from Heaven: DFI Workshop - Friday 8th March

Summary

A productive day incorporating the theme of learn, create, share, focussing on computer skills and knowledge to enhance our searching, formatting and blog capabilities. Inclusive of images and tablets, that can be passed onto the boys and girls in Room 7, to generate visual graphics and text material.

Audio recording can help those learners who struggle to type on a device, lack confidence in their oral language or need assistance to annunciate their words. Hearing your own voice can help you to recognise where pauses and full stops should be, when reading aloud or holding a conversation.

Being paired with a colleague (new friend) made learning fun when we were given a sentence starter to complete.

I created a poster to share Room 7's learning experiences so far this year.
